Brighton Band Flip Folder and Lyre Information

For each instrument, there is an explanation as to what is needed and multiple links to where the materials can be purchased. These items can also be purchased at a music store, such as Amro Music; many times, these items can be purchased through Amro by calling them at 901-323-8888. In addition, students should be careful not to lose the flipbook rings and will likely need additional pages by the time they reach high school. Flute

  • Flutes need a specific flip folder/lyre combo. They do not have to purchase them separately.

Clarinet

  • All Clarinetists will need a flip Folder and a lyre. The lyre can be specific to the brand of the instrument. Yamaha lyres only will fit Yamaha instruments. Most other brands will be able to use the generic lyre; it may be worth going to the music store with your instrument just to make sure that it will fit properly.

Saxophone

  • All Saxophonists will need a flip Folder and a lyre. The lyre can be specific to the brand of the instrument. Yamaha lyres only will fit Yamaha instruments. Most other brands will be able to use the generic lyre; it may be worth going to the music store with your instrument just to make sure that it will fit properly.

Trumpet

  • All Trumpet Players will need a flip Folder and a lyre. There are numerous ones available. We personally recommend the clip-on-bell version, as it is both a flip folder and a lyre; it will also work on any forward-facing brass instrument. There are also versions that either clip to the lead pipe of the instrument or take the place of the third valve slide ring; these will need a flip folder with them. Be careful with all of these versions, as if the clamp covers are ripped, they will likely scratch the instrument

    • There is also a clamp-on lead pipe version out there made by either Faxx or Bach that tends to work well, but is more expensive. It is available in both silver and gold to match the instrument.

Mellophone

  • All Mellophone Players will need a flip Folder and a lyre. There are numerous ones available and depend upon the brand. We personally recommend the clip-on-bell version, as it is both a flip folder and a lyre; it will also work on any forward-facing brass instrument.

  • If a student (middle school) is marching a concert french horn, we recommend using a flute lyre, as it is easier to do with than the traditional french horn lyre.

Trombone/Marching Baritone/Euphonium

All Trombone/Marching Baritone/Euphonium Players will need a flip Folder and a lyre. There are numerous ones available and depend upon the brand. We personally recommend the clip-on-bell version, as it is both a flip folder and a lyre; it will also work on any forward-facing brass instrument.

Concert Euphonium/Tuba/Sousaphone

  • All Concert Euphonium/Tuba/Sousaphone players will need a flip folder and lyre. The lyre can be specific to the brand of the instrument and will likely have to be bent to make it work properly. It is a pain, but it is how they are made because all of the brands are different. Yamaha has their own specific lyre, where most other brands can use any other generic lyre.

Percussion

  • Percussionists will need a flip folder. There are percussion lyres that are made, but they require the drum to be disassembled partially to be placed on. They can also affect the tension of the drums. Because of this, we usually just sit the flip folder on top of the drum as we play. Cymbal players usually have to bring a stand or place the flipbook in a way where they can still read it while playing.
